What applies to cancelled Eurowings flights?
Cancellations happen for many reasons – but not all of them exempt the airline from liability. You are entitled to compensation if:
Were informed of the cancellation less than 14 days before departure
Were not offered an alternative flight within a reasonable time
Arrived significantly later than your original flight
If you were not offered an alternative flight or were rebooked on a flight with a delay of more than 2 hours, you may be entitled to both compensation and a refund of your ticket.
Compensation for delayed flights
A flight delay with Eurowings of more than 3 hours may entitle you to compensation, unless the delay was caused by circumstances beyond Eurowings' control.
Typical reasons that entitle you to compensation:
Technical problems
Lack of staff
Operational errors
Overbooking
When can Eurowings avoid paying compensation?
Eurowings may be exempt from liability in the event of extraordinary circumstances – events beyond the airline's control, including:
Strikes by airport staff
Force majeure, e.g. terrorist threats or bad weather
Closed airspace or air traffic control problems
But be aware: Many cases are rejected by the airline on these grounds – even if they are not always the correct reasons for the flight disruption. It may therefore be helpful to have your case assessed professionally.
