Refundmore makes it possible: Compensation + ticket refund

Refundmore offers a special service to help you not only get compensation for your delayed or cancelled flight, but also get a refund for your self-booked alternative transport.

With a case with Refundmore, you can get:

Compensation under EU Regulation 261 for flight delays or cancellations
Up to €600 depending on the distance of the flight.

Full refund of your self-purchased replacement transport
Applies to new flight tickets, trains, buses or rental cars

When are you entitled to both compensation and reimbursement?

Here are three hypothetical scenarios

copenhagen-new-york

Cancelled flight with unacceptable alternative solution

You have booked a flight with SAS from Copenhagen to New York. On the day of departure, the flight is suddenly cancelled, and SAS offers you an alternative flight – but not until 12 hours later.

This is unacceptable to you, as you have an important meeting to attend. To get to your destination on time, you buy a new flight ticket with KLM via Amsterdam for €900.

Your claim:

Compensation under EU 261/2004: €600 (due to flight cancellation)

Alternative transport costs: €900 (your self-booked alternative flight)

Your total claim: €1500

Significant delay due to cancelled flight

You have booked an early morning flight with Norwegian from Oslo to Stockholm. Upon arrival at the airport, the flight is suddenly cancelled, and Norwegian offers you an alternative flight in the evening. You choose to decline this offer and instead take a train to Stockholm for €144.

Your claim:

Compensation under EU 261/2004: €250 (due to short-haul flight)

Alternative transport cost: €144 (your self-booked train ticket)

Your total claim: €394

Delayed flight due to technical problems

You have booked a flight with Lufthansa from Copenhagen to Barcelona, with a stopover in Munich. The first flight is delayed by 4 hours due to technical problems and you will therefore miss your connecting flight. Instead, you buy a ticket for a British Airways flight for €199, which will get you to your destination faster.

Your claim:

Compensation under EU 261/2004: €400 (due to long delay and distance)

Alternative transport costs: €199 (your new flight ticket)

Your total claim: €599

Your rights as an air passenger in the event of a delayed or cancelled flight

When you have purchased a flight ticket, the airline is obliged to transport you from your original departure point to your final destination in accordance with your total reservation. These rights apply to all flights within the EU and to many flights outside the EU, depending on the airline and route.

If your flight is cancelled or if you experience a delay of several hours compared to the original arrival time, you may be entitled to:

  • Financial compensation of up to €600

  • Refund of the original ticket

  • Coverage of new flight tickets or other alternative transport

As a general rule, you are entitled to both compensation and reimbursement when:

  • Your delayed or cancelled flight is due to circumstances within the airline's control

  • The delay exceeds five hours

  • Boarding is denied

  • The cancellation was not announced in good time

  • You reach your final destination significantly later than planned

The only exception is if the delay is due to extraordinary circumstances that the airline could not avoid, even with all reasonable precautions.

Examples include:

  • Political unrest

  • Extreme weather

  • Airspace closures

When you buy a new ticket yourself after a flight cancellation or delay

In many cases, the airline will offer an alternative solution. However, if the airline offers a replacement that departs significantly later than the scheduled departure or causes further delays, you are not obliged to accept it.

If the airline does not provide suitable transport, you must take action yourself.

This means that you can purchase:

  • A new flight ticket

  • Train, bus or taxi

  • A rental car to your final destination

NB: Always keep all receipts, as these are essential for getting your money back.
